You might wonder why it seems images of sage on social media and talks of burning sage sticks seems to be a popular trend these days. The truth is, sage has been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Moreover, Native Americans and other indigenous people have burned sage for centuries as part of a spiritual ceremony to cleanse a person or space of negative energy and promote healing. Indigenous people believe the act of burning sage, also referred to as "smudging" not only cleanses your energy field, but when properly used with intentions, is a sure way to connect spiritually with your ancestors and enhances your intuition; allowing you to receive wisdom. This remains true today, as we incorporate burning sage into our daily lives for these same reasons. Burning sage not only clears out spiritual impurities, it also has antimicrobial properties that keeps infectious bacteria, viruses, and fungi at bay. Studies have shown that burning sage in a room can reduced airborne bacteria by 94 percent.
Which leads me to a few more important things to share with you. It's important to note that energy cannot be destroyed. However, energy can be transferred, transformed and re-directed. Once we learn this, we understand that energies attach themselves to us as we move about daily.
There are steps to burning sage. First, open the windows of the rooms where you'll be burning sage so that smoke and energies can be released. Second, always start with smudging yourself from the top of your head down and away from you. Now you're ready to smudge the rest of your space, home, or office. After smudging to clear your personal space, it's equally important to replace that newly cleansed space with a sweeter fragrance by burning sweetgrass, lavender, or roses. Some even prefer to spray a perfume. Natives believed that if you didn't fill that cleared energy field with a sweeter fragrance, negative energies would return. This is not an unlikely notion. Especially if you are most likely to frequent the same places with the same people on a daily basis. Another, yet stronger incense for removing negative energy that does not require burning a sweeter fragrance afterward, is "Palo Santo." I'll share more about the wonders of palo santo in future blogs. Until then, here are just a few major benefits of burning sage that's changing the lives of so many people as they become enlightened with the benefits of burning sage as a lifestyle not a trend.
Benefits of burning sage:
